We wouldn't work in a bookshop if we weren't the kind of people that exclaim with delight when unpacking boxes of books, hoard, swap and generally gloat over proof copies, coo over deckled edging, and have our favourite authors' next releases noted in our calendars within a nanosecond of the first mention in the trade press. We can't wait to get busy with the shiny new recommendation stickers that have arrived this week, setting our personal imprimaturs on the books we love best - look out for them too in the coming weeks...
Yet sometimes even we are overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches proffered by publishers. This year, September is especially filled with fruitfulness – so much so that we felt we could not constrain ourselves to just one 'Book of the Week'. We've declared September the 'Month of the Book'. Every day, we'll be highlighting one new title we're excited about – on our website, in our Bury Place windows, and on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. And if you're first through the Bookshop door in the morning, come prepared to open our non-advent calendar in order to reveal today's chosen goodie.
Eagerly-anticipated novels from faces old and new; history and politics; poetry, letters and children's books - our pick of the best of the bounty will guide you through the month, gradually accumulating in our Month of the Book booklist. (My personal favourites are on the 5th, the 16th and the 25th.) We're keeping our full list under wraps in order not to spoil the surprise, but we can't wait to tell you about our choices...
This post is brought to you by the woman who had a Google Alert set up for Eleanor Catton's 'The Luminaries' 18 months ahead of its UK publication.
