2014 marks a hundred years since 8 March was established as the official date for the celebration of International Women's Day, although a 'Women's Day' has been observed on other dates and in other forms since 1908. We asked some inspiring women to recommend inspiring books (also by women) – work that they felt deserved appreciation, celebration and the widest possible audience.
Over the next few days, you can look forward to, amongst others:
- Short story collections worth devouring from Joanna Walsh, originatorof the #ReadWomen2014 Twitter campaign
- Terry Castle's gallimaufry of catastrophic flaws and imagined lives
- Bidisha's 'unexpected mix of fiction, non-fiction, polemic,history...'
- Books from Marina Warner's favourite 'mischief-makers and elegists'
- Caroline Criado Perez on the writers that shaped her path to feminism.
Check in daily for picks by these and many more writers, and perhaps a surprise or two from our archives.
