And the Winner is...
So, it’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights. It’s time to announce some of the highlights from the London Review Bookshop events programme, in the form of a slightly-amusing-if-you’re-easily-pleased Oscar-type awards ceremony. With no further ado let’s move on to the lucky winners:
Best Newcomer Juliet Jacques for her event for her memoir, Trans. See also Special Award for Services to the Promotion of Norwich City FC into the Public Literary Conciousness
Best-Dressed goes to the beautifully dapper Miranda July who came to sign copies of her novel The First Bad Man. See also Longest Queue for a Public Signing.
Best Actress must go to Susie Harker, previously well known for her roles in Pride and Prejudice and House of Cards but now immortalised forever in the London Review Bookshop archive for her reading of Katherine Mansfield during Kirsty Gunn’s event for My Katherine Mansfield Project.
Best Film: Housekeeping directed Bill Forsyth as selected and introduced by Jonathan Coe. Did you know that there was a film of the 1980 Marilynne Robinson novel? Neither did we; thank you, Jonathan.
Most Enigmatic has to go to the elusive Elena Ferrante who managed a sell-out event without even showing up. (See also Best Event Title for Ferrante Fever.)
Best Musical (Memoir) goes to Carrie Brownstein, of Sleater-Kinney and Portlandia fame, for her eloquent and lyrical dissection of her new book, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl.
Most Joyful Poetry Reading has to be given to Carcanet's New Poetries VI with a special distinction for the reading by our very own John Clegg, who was a shoe-in for Most Useful Advice for Safe Lasso Handling - listen here; lasso info starts about 37 minutes in.
