Gayle’s spring picks 2025

Selected by Gayle Lazda

After 2023’s Biography of X, I am a fully signed up member of the Catherine Lacey cult, and I cannot wait to read The Möbius Book, which is both her first foray into non-fiction and her latest foray into fiction – the kind experimentation in form that you’d hope for from one of the most exciting writers around.

Two debuts with unforgettable voices out this spring: Oliver Lovrenski’s Back in the Day is a doomed coming-of-age story following four friends navigating a brutal and chaotic world, told in an utterly believable voice – a remarkable novel, and a no less remarkable feat of translation by Nichola Smalley; and Wendy Erskine’s The Benefactors brilliantly captures not one, but an entire polyphony of Belfast voices, telling the story of a sexual assault and its impact on a community.

Also on my radar: Solvej Balle’s extraordinary seven-part series (or the first two volumes of it anyway), On the Calculation of Volume, in Barbara J. Haveland’s International Booker-shortlisted translation; Akshi Singh’s exploration of the work of psychoanalyst Marion Milner, In Defence of Leisure; Elisa Levi’s That’s All I Know, translated by Christina MacSweeney, which I’ve been told you will definitely go wild for if you love the films of Alice Rohrwacher (and I do); film critic Ryan Gilbey’s personal journey through queer cinema, It Used to Be Witches; and two reissues, Alexander Baron’s classic portrait of the underbelly of post-war London The Lowlife, and The Loft by Marlen Haushofer, author of the unforgettable The Wall.
