In his latest novel Death and the Gardener (W&N) Georgi Gospodinov, Bulgaria’s leading writer of fiction and winner of the International Booker Prize (for Time Shelter), reflects on the subject of loss in a tale about a father, a son, and an orphaned garden in a fading world that spans from ancient Ithaca to present-day Sofia.
